"The ice stone has melted!"

Mixing real life with WoW

Thoughts on Cataclysm

Well, it has been roughly two months since WoW:Cataclysm went live, and so far I can sum it up in one resounding "Ehhhhh...."

Its not that I don't like it, but with the increased difficulty in heroics and the raids, things seem to go at a snail's pace. By the time I finish one heroic, I'm already dead tired (especially the ones like Halls of Origination with its seven bosses, damn place qualifies as a mini-raid) and only got 70 points and no loot (which btw on my main, he doesn't need anymore heroic gear). As for raids, well with my guild so far we only downed MagnaMaw and almost got Omnotron last night, but I get the feeling that none of the Cata raids will be on farm status any time soon (btw again, Tol Barad doesn't count....blasted boss is a snooze-fest). Thus the progression of things appears slow, but steady at best.

I don't know. I have not found anything exciting yet, but its not like that the game is bad now that Blizzard decided to cave in to hard-core players demanding more of an effort. I just worry that end-game completion may be only limited to the hard-core folks, while the casual crowd gets a pat-on-the-back for effort and reduced to have-nots. Thus the source of some of my less-than-steller review of the game. I don't want it to be hard to the point where I cannot relax while playing, nor to have the goals and rewards kept out of reach without an effort that demands near perfect execution by players and groups. That defeats the purpose of a game: to relax and have fun. Perhaps WotLK spoiled me and alot of other people.

In the meantime, its grinding for rep and chewing glass on raid bosses. Somebody pass the salt and the antacid, please.

LK kill #2

It may seem cheap to mention that I got a second LK kill, but for some reason this kill was more....appropriate since I got it with my Death Knight. Kinda like completing an RP circle starting with my DK's creation by the hands of Arthas almost two years ago and culminating tonight to Arthas's death.

I guess what makes this better is that I was a lone pugger in an all-guild run that wanted the kill. I'm glad that I help make it happen for them. Just in time for Cataclysm, too.

Wanderlust

Lately, I have been hit with feelings of travel. Kinda surprising since summer is over and winter is around the corner. But, I figure I try to get down as to "why now?"

For the last few years, especially after the '08 summer season of $4 gallon of gas, I have limited myself of much travel since it has gotten expensive in both time and money to do so. Another reason is that I just don't have anywhere I rather go. However, being cooped up in Greenville has slowly begun to catch up to me and suddenly I find myself wanted to get out for awhile.

Its funny. I've told some of my friends this and the No. 1 response to my plight was "Go to Vegas!" While the idea may seem pleasing, I just don't see it as a panacea, and even more so I just spend 6k on hearing aids and I don't have much to blow on a bunch of slots and blackjack. However, I'll probably visit Sin City one day, but just not now.

I've been pondering as to what to do, but sadly no real answers that fit my interests come to mind. However, I DO intend on visiting Washington D.C. one day and go to the Smithsonian. My inner nerd has been salivating on the idea since I passed by D.C. back in '09. Been trying to arrange it work, but fate had other ideas and slammed me and my colleagues all year long with task after task (if you asked me if we were in a recession this past spring I would have laughed my ass off). But D.C. is at best a spring idea, and right now I just need to please whatever traveling bug that bit me.

Warcraft 4.0.1

Yeeeesh, playing WoW these days on patch 4.0.1 has been nothing but a headache.  New talents, new "priority rotations" (sounds like an oxymoron to me), new glyphs, and most of all, a new approach in playstyle.  But despite all the new stuff that abounds, sadly there is a TON of broken code in the game that has driven me to the edge of insanity.

I am keenly aware and have accepted the fact that Blizzard took a refined version of the PTR on the live servers in an attempt to polish everything before the big Cataclysm launch on December 7th.  However, I was frustrated to the point of outright quitting WoW with the so-called "Cogwheel of Doom"  Never heard of it?  Lucky you.  Just google it and all will be revealed.

Now, there is a temporary "fix" to this; simply run two macros before actually going cross-server, but it only reminds me that the game I enjoy is currently and deliberately broken.  I've been trying to understand the new tanking mechanics (no more WOTLK style tanking, but a revamp of the old TBC style), but I've almost stopped playing just to wait for Blizzard to release a new patch.  Eh, I am dead tired of ICC, all the 5-mans, and even the World Events (Hallow's End is currently live).

Ugh, December 7th just can't come fast enough, but then again, I feel like I don't care anymore :(

PVP rant

I'm pissed.

Alliance suck, nay DEVOUR, the balls off a dead goat when it comes to PVP.  Gah, bashed my head for the team trying to defend flags and what do I get???  A buttload of Horde up my rear end and nothing but excuses and insults from others, who in turn can't do better.

Went 1-8 tonight, not winning the honor weekend and only getting an Arathi Basin win with the skin of the allies' teeth.

Damn, why does my battlegroup all have idiots?

Hearing is expensive

I will start off with a question:  what would you spend for if you had $6000?  Surely a number of things come to mind, but for me, I went and done something I should have done sooner:  New Hearing Aids.

It was and event coming sooner or later as my old ones were slowly dying, being 11 years old and still working.  But I admit, 6k isn't something I would simply hand out.  Thankfully, I had the funds just for moments like this.

As for my new set of earbuds, these things are quite impressive.  They are nearly invisible behind my ear, they are programmable to be fully adjustable specifically for my needs, they have noise suppression technology, and are Bluetooth-ready.  I can really notice a difference in conversations now.  So much so that I realized that I was missing out alot in things.  They feel awkward now, but it won't be long before I get used to them.  All I need is a few more months of savings to make up for the cost!

PVP'ing
Excel Saga
electrochem
I'll confess:  I'm not a PVP person.  I would very much rather raid and go about my business in WoW.  However, I cannot deny the overwhelming fact that Wrath has simply grown too long in the tooth and I had to find something else to do.  Okay, so I had about 400 frost badges and 600 triumph badges stocked, and then went out to buy a quickie PVP set.

Now, its has been two weeks since I officially began PVP'ing, and I must say its different, but not that exciting.  However, it is new and I intend to stick with it until Cata claws me back towards (UGH!!!) leveling my toons again.  But there is one thing I will admit here and now ever since I started PVP'ing:  Blood elves are the most obnoxious class ever to grace this game.  I swear they are grinning every time I fight em and they deserve to die, again and again and again and again....with a side of a 10-ton warhammer smashing into their bishie faces.

I do believe I'll never roll a Belf as long as I play this game.  Freaks, all of em.

Laptop redux

I currently have a Dell laptop that serves as, mostly, a travel companion to the beach and wherever as the portable DVD player and mini-game machine.  It really doesn't have much to it but it serves me well, with the glaring exception that is.....

Windows Vista

Yuck.  I really don't like that OS, and with that I plan to do a full HD format and put on Windows 7.  I hope, in the least, that I won't have to jump through the security crap that was Vista.  However, my only real concern is if there are any Dell drivers that I absolutely have to have, will I run into issues getting them?  Eh, if so, I do have the restore disk, but.......yeeeeech, Vista.

Going to see what I can do this weekend.

At long last

Finally, it is done.  After months of grinding, wiping, and undergoing guild drama over it, the Lich King is dead.  I've committed regicide and I'm glad its done.

Rust in pieces, Arthas, but thanks for dropping that nice tanking axe for me.
